Careers

Choosing a career path is one of the most important decisions you will ever make as it will effect your whole future. Therefore it is of great importance to take the time and research various potential roles you might like to perform so that you can make an informed decision. This will prevent you starting down a path you may eventually regret taking.

First of all think about what qualifications you have (or intend to have) and how these may or may not restrict the career choices you have open to you.

Next think about your goals in your employment life. Do you want money, job satisfaction, flexibility or something else? What sort of jobs will provide you with this?

One important point you may wish to look at is whether your chosen career path really shows any signs of progression. Is there a lot of competition for a handful of more senior roles? What do you have to do in order to make the grade and get that promotion? How long might it be before you are even considered for a position of more responsibility?

Different industry sectors are centralized around different areas of the country. So you have to decide if you are willing to up roots and move in order to achieve your career goals. For that extra special job and what should be a valuable and rewarding experience would you move across the country?

Changing careers is not always an easy thing to do but more and more people are taking the plunge nowadays so don’t despair if you find yourself in a job that you no longer find exciting or challenging.

The options are various. Returning to education is on the increase with the number of mature students growing year on year. Starting from scratch in an entry-level position might not be feasible for some given financial commitments such as mortgages but can be ideal for people who want a new challenge.

If you are really brave you might choose the path of self-employment. Starting up a business of your own is probably the most exciting and yet difficult option available to you. A high percentage of start-up businesses fail in their first year so you need to plan carefully and try and think of all the possible pitfalls you may face. Self-employment can be extremely financially rewarding if the company is a success but be prepared to work very hard to achieve this.
