Accounting jobs are constantly evolving, and nowadays, the term ‘accountant’ is gradually being phased out in favour of the title, ‘business adviser’. This is due to the continued expansion of the sector into all areas of business, rather than simply finance. The aims of the traditional accountant have changed somewhat, and now they are designed to help businesses realise their goals, using the most efficient possible methods. The role of the modern accountant is a great deal more strategic and tends to incorporate the following:

Do not be discouraged, however, as accountancy is continuing to grow in the UK, which means there is a demand for accountants. In fact, Association of Graduate Recruiters’ Winter Review 2006, claimed nearly a quarter of all job vacancies in 2005 were with accountancy or professional services firms.

This career could be worth around £25,000+ for candidates with excellent numeracy and communicative skills, self-discipline and a logical approach to work. As always, relevant work experience shows good initiative and may prove to be very valuable.
