Building Jobs
It seems that new houses, schools and office blocks are popping up all the time, meaning a great deal of building jobs are currently available. In particular demand are surveyors.
Building surveyors are required to give advice on all aspects of construction, including design, restoration, refurbishment, repair and maintenance. They are responsible for ensuring that the project sticks to budget, as well as to the planned time scale. Meanwhile, they must ensure that the project adheres to legal regulations and is environmentally sound.
By contrast, quantity surveyors are needed to manage all of the cost relating to a variety of different building projects. Their role includes preparing budgets and allocating work to sub-contractors. Starters can potentially earn up to £27,000, with seniors earning between £30,000 and £50,000
There are also jobs available as building services engineers who deal with all energy using elements in buildings such as water supply, heating, fire protection and safety systems. They have to ensure that such systems are designed and maintained in an environmentally sound way. Salaries for this job start between £17,000 and £25,000 and can increase to up to £45,000 at a more senior level.
A job as a site engineer is a particularly varied role in the building sector as, not only does it require technical performance (such as setting out the site), but also a supervisory input. Communication skills are essential for a job which starts at £20,000, but can potentially be worth £40,000 per year to you. However, don’t forget that this job requires that you regularly work unsocial hours and that you are required to have a decent level of fitness!
