The engineering sector is extremely big. With an estimated 800,000 engineers in a sector employing roughly 1.7 million people all together. Most engineering sub-sectors are thriving; in particular, chemical engineering graduates are commanding some of the best salaries, as they can work in any field involving the development of industrial processes.

Engineering can be categorised into different roles such as:

Each of these roles will combine common, generic skills such as design, project management and planning with more area-specific capabilities.

Almost all engineering jobs (apart from the very basic entry-level positions) will require a bachelor’s degree as minimum entry requirements with many others needing further levels of study such as a postgraduate degree or professional qualification.

The effort does not go unrewarded. According to a report by PriceWaterhouseCoopers, published in 2005, over the course of their career, engineers earn almost £220,000 or nearly 30% more than colleagues without a degree.

Potential engineering candidates will have to show some important abilities when they apply for a position. All fields of engineering will require a logical thought process and engineers will be required to solve problems on a regular basis so both skills are crucial. Add to this good all-round organisational and communication skills and you will have many of the things needed to progress in this industry.

To reach the top-level engineering jobs where you will manage large and complex projects it could be advantageous to gain experience in more than a single engineering sub-sector (like those listed above). When considering these senior levels you will also want to ensure you have a good knowledge or experience in the general world of business with commercial awareness and people management being the fundamental areas to focus on.
