IT Jobs

Make your move into the IT sector

The highly skilled world of information technology and computing is one where knowledge is held among the most important qualities. With so many variations in skills, programming languages and software setups the demand for IT experts capable of tackling problems and developing new solutions for companies is continually growing.

The rise of the internet has only increased the need for technical support and as demand grows so do the wages. There tends to be a shortage of candidates with the necessary knowledge base which drives up the potential salaries for those that possess such experience.

However, more and more companies are turning to a new influx of graduates from IT related courses and training them in-house to ensure a particular standard and a very specific skill set. This focus can be potentially problematic in the future should technologies change or should you want to change jobs so as a candidate it is your responsibility to decide how broad or narrow a knowledge you wish to achieve.

Progressing in an IT job is not always as fast as in other industries but there are things that you can do to help yourself. There are many qualifications that you can work towards to make you more employable and some companies will aid you in your goals by giving you time off for external training. Financial backing for the seminars, workshops and other educational formats may also be sought from the employing company.

The activities that might be asked of you will be very different depending on whether you choose to join a large or small company. Within a sizeable organisation your responsibilities will generally be fewer with expertise being gained in a single programming language. A smaller firm, on the other hand, will provide you with a far wider range of task to immerse yourself in and can include software support, hardware setup and programming all mixed together. It is this second type of experience that can help the most should your goal be IT management.

Whatever IT job you are aiming for, with technology moving at such a pace be prepared to learn new things everyday in an exciting and challenging career.
