In today’s society, it seems everyone and everything needs insuring – One advantage of this? There’s always insurance jobs available, and in a variety of different capacities.

For example, insurance claims inspectors are employed to receive claims, assess liability and see them through to settlement. This is potentially an extremely varied and interesting job, as it involves going to visit scenes of accidents, talking to witnesses, police and medical staff etc. and compiling findings. A good way of getting into this career without a degree is through junior/clerical roles at insurance companies. Full training is available to all, although for the higher salaries (of £40,000+), Chartered Institute Insurance qualifications are required, as well as experience. Usual starting salaries are between £11,000 and £26,000 which rise with experience.

An alternative job in insurance is a risk assessor, who visits clients and conducts surveys of the sites they need to insure. It is possible to specialise in areas such as health and safety or fires and floods. Trainees usually start at around £21,000 per year, although with experience, there is potential to earn well over £35,000 in this job (even higher for seniors!) Although a degree is not essential to become an insurance risk assessor, it seems that the positions are increasingly being filled by graduates.

Many risk assessors start out as insurance underwriters. These can expect to earn up to £24,000 (though this figure can double after around 10 years experience), and their job involves deciding whether applications for insurance should be accepted and on what terms. This decision is reached primarily through gathering background information and assessing the risks involved. Entry without a degree or HND is sometimes possible, though the candidate must have an analytical mind and sound judgement.
