Tax Jobs

Interested in Tax... Consultancy and Compliance?

The majority of people in tax jobs are employed in advisory roles which contain two main aspects: consultancy and compliance. Both aspects require that the tax advisor is up to speed with all of the latest tax legislation, and can communicate the relevant implications in simple terms to their clients. They must use research, analysis and interpretation in order to ensure that their grasp on the taxation system is sound. Tax advisors, in particular in terms of compliance, will also have to be able to submit tax returns on behalf of their clients. Advisors focusing particularly on consultancy, concentrate on the minimisation of tax liabilities in a lawful way.

The size of the individual firm determines the degree to which its advisors are specialised, with larger companies enjoying the ability to employ tax advisors with particular areas of expertise.

Another option is to become a tax inspector, whose rule ensure that tax laws are being complied with and that individuals and companies alike are paying the correct amount of tax. They will check tax returns to see if they are in line with the account, and investigate further any cases of suspected tax fraud. A sound knowledge of the tax system is required, which also allows the inspector to work in an advisory role. The ability to investigate and analyse information is of paramount importance in this line of work, as is a very high standard of mathematical skills. Good communication skills are also important, along with a creative approach to problem solving.

Full training is given for tax jobs, although a second class honours degree is also generally required. Without a degree, it is possible to start as an administrative assistant and, with the correct training and experience, work your way up. There is a potential to earn a salary up to around £55,000 in this career.
